Segamat weekend trip

Over the weekend, we went to Segamat, Jason's hometown. There were 10 of us, including Jason & I. Basically they were the same batch of people who came down to Melaka the other time, except for 2 persons.

We met up at our designated areas, before leaving for Segamat. Since the manhunt was on, and we heard that a colleague's sister got stuck for about 4 hours just to cross over to JB, we decided to have our dinner first just in case the same thing happened to us. We got stuck at the road leading to Tuas checkpoint for about half an hour and we were on our way to JB. *Phew* Thank God it wasn't a long wait.

We made our way through Segamat by exiting through Yong Peng, and it was trunk roads all the way. We reached at about close to 11 I think. Checked in to the hotel and left for supper. Most of us had nasi lemak & chicken curry for supper, cooked by Jason's 3rd aunt. It was yummy. At the same time, we sang a birthday song for Michelle once it passed midnight.

Next morning, we went to Kg. Tengah for the famous roti-canai done by a Chinese guy. After that we took a short walk around the village there. (very rare sight for Sporeans :P). Then Jason's mum called us to go for our durians. She ordered 10kgs of it. It's so yummy. Frank couldn't stand it. Hahaha. After that, we left for Gunung Ledang waterfalls. Kenneth was the only one who did not dipped in. The rest of us did. Water was very cold, freezing. Walked our way down and upon reaching Segamat, headed straight for wantan mee outside the Canossian Convent school. Immediately after that, we headed for Nanyang Coffee & toast. After that, we went for a stroll at the night market along the road side. Hehehe.

That night, we went to eat (again!) at a restaurant for dinner (we had late dinner since we had so much food before that), celebrated Michelle's b'day with a cake... And after that, headed to Jason's place to chill. Upon reaching his house, his mum asked us to finish the remaining durians we had earlier on. I bought mangosteens at the night market, so after durians, we finished them after the durians. Hehehe. The night was spent watching a funny chinese movie (can't remember the title) and thereafter, the guys watched footie. By then, Jason sent the girls back to the hotel, and I was most probably in Lala-land.

Next morning, before church, we brought them for dim sum breakfast. Nothing good about it, just that, we had to eat right? Hehehe. After church, they checked out from the hotel and we had bakuteh just behind the hotel under the trees. It started to pour after that, thank God we were sitting under the shed and not in the open. Kenneth mentioned he was full. But when he saw the bakuteh he said, "Now, I'm feeling so famished". Hahaha. It was nice & yummy.

Not to mentioned, after bakuteh, went to Jason's house to chill again, and back to Nanyang coffee before leaving for Spore. Record: 9 long toasts, 3 soft buns, 8 half-boiled eggs, 10 cups of kopi-si/peng,teh-si/ping,kopi,teh. Because we felt our body might over heat, we went to have one round of ku-cha (bitter tea)/ liang-teh (cooling tea)/ chrysanthemum tea before we left. Half way through, we stopped at Kulai for dinner. Another round of good food. Fried squids, ostrich meat, prawns cooked in 2 different styles, fried bee hoon, and potato leaves. *brrrpp*. After that, we had another round of mangosteens (from the durian orchard owner) again.

Oh yeah, did I mention that after church, we went to visit the durian orchard owner again to get another 20kgs of durians? This time, we packed into smaller containers to ta-pao back. Hehehe. Also for our friends back here in Spore. Just imagine the whole car stinked!!! Thank God the customs officer didn't mention anything. Hehehe. I brought back a tupperware of bird's nest (yum-yum), 3 huge dragonfruits, and one bottle of grape enzyme. I'm so full.

That explains why I need to go on a healthier diet/ detox. Over the weekend, I gained 1kg actually. Plus the additional 3kgs I gained ever since I came to Spore.. *boo hoo*

Steamboat & Crabs

24th Jan 08

We went out for dinner with LY, and we met up at Bugis. I'm not sure what road this is at, but I know, after you pass by the cinema, cross the road, there's one whole road full of restaurants. We mostly saw steamboat restaurants, and after walking through the whole road, we ended up in the first steamboat restaurant. The guys were so tempted by the redness of the beef & pork slices. Hehehe. And the name of the restaurant goes something like this: Chuan Yi Pin Chinese Restaurant.
Updates: Total damage for 3 pax: $60 (it's buffet, by the way)

26th Jan 08

We went back to Segamat over the weekend. Came back by train (reached home almost half past midnight!), because we are going back next week by train. So buying tix from Msia - Spore - Msia is cheaper, as you get to pay in RM :).

MIL bought crabs. They were so fresh that the night before, they were walking all over her bathroom and she had to tie them. Ha. And so, the pro chef, Jason's maternal grandma came over to cook the chili crabs.

1. Fry the crabs a lil with salt to taste. Then take it out and put it aside.

2. To make the sauce, put in garlic, chili paste, curry powder & onions. Stir-fry till the smell comes out. Hehe.

3. Put in salt & sugar to taste.

4. Put in the crabs.

5. Fry, fry, fry, put in one beaten egg in it & curry leaves.

6. Ready to serve.

The portion shown is for 3kg crabs. Yummy!

Bird-A-Calling

No No, it's not what you understand. It's not what you think you would hear during sales in Melaka ("Cheap, cheap, cheap"), it's REAL bird calling.

I can't exactly find it on the internet the actual meaning, but this was somehow what was done.
I followed Jason & FIL (father-in-law) for bird calling over when we were in Segamat over the weekend. We got the equipment, basically it's a car cd-player fixed to tweeters (small car speakers, which enhances the sound system in the car) and fix the cable to the cigarette burner. Next, A few kinds of cds were played to "call" the birds. Hehehe.

Bird calling is done before you actually want to test whether that area is suitable to build a bird house. It is also to see the number of birds which actually comes circling around the tweeters, and of course, the more the better, because this means, your bird house will have lots of birds & nests. But it was a bit of a disappointment because we saw the birds rather high up in the sky, but none actually came really swooping down and low. It was unlike what Jason has seen on the video. Perhaps, we would try it again and I would take a video of it. Hehehe.

After that, we went further outskirt and it's amazing, you don't have to do bird calling, but there were dozens of them near the oil palms and durian orchards. Looking for insects to feed on before returning to the nest... Looking at it, FIL said, perhaps, there could be about a thousand in that building and perhaps more, if they have nests. Wow.

And so, nothing fruitful came out of it. Perhaps, another time round when our little experiment is successful... :)
